Upon her escape with the help of a friend, Virginia, she starts back for the children and runs into Lt. Tyler Merrick. She hopes he will help her. But he's drunk and doesn't believe there are children. He thinks Justine is the rogue spy he been sent to find.

Justine goes for the children and returns to an even angrier Lt. Merrick. He wants to tie her up. She hopes to win his trust. Because if they can't stop fighting one another, they will never get off the island alive.

"Who are you?" he bellowed in a tongue foreign to most Americans. "Why are you here? Who is the Sandpiper?"

The roar echoed through the chambers of her brain like mounting thunder. She understood him clearly, but was not about to let slip that she knew Japanese. She valued her life. Or considering the malevolence in his eyes, what little there might be left of it.

Lowering her eyes in contrition, she feigned stupidity. Hazarding a peek every so often, she tried to watch him unnoticed.

His eyes narrowing, he cupped her neck and gruffly clutching her face, stuck his nose near hers and yelled the questions once more. "Who are you? Who is the Sandpiper? Why are you here?"

Evidently, he thought she understood him.

His fingers pressed her windpipe making it hard to swallow. A wicked grin tripped the corners of his lips. He grasped her neck tighter, and shook her none too lightly. "Who are you? Who is the Sandpiper? Why are you here?"

Feeling like she might break, she drew a long shuddering sigh. But she didn't look at him. She didn't answer. She offered a meager shrug instead. The tormentor responded with a deep, guttural growl. She glanced up in time to see his hand rear back. Before she could duck, before she could even flinch, his hand cracked hard against her lips, leaving her dazed and tasting blood and tears.
