Product Description

After losing the woman he loved to a rival, Roger Talbot set out to redefine his life by devoting it to public service. A decade later, he now serves at Port Delamar's District Attorney. Having just successfully prosecuted the most high profile murder case of his career, Roger turns his attention to discovering the shady dealings of NIles Parker -- his former boss and the father of the woman Roger almost married. But he can't stop thinking about the mysterious lady who sat in the back of his courtroom throughout the murder trail.

More than ten years have passed since Pennye Carrington ran away from home and assumed a new identity. When she learns her younger brother is being prosecuted for murdering a family member of a famous movie star, she feels compelled to return home, face her violent and dysfunctional past, and try to rescue her other siblings before it's too late.

Two people who couldn't be further apart in their upbringing are brought together as the discover the truth behind their separate missions. In the process, might they discover each other as well as themselves?

"Sure," she said. Strange man. For all of his sophistication, he'd ordered a burger, fries, and a soda, yet he couldn't stoop to condiments. She started for the kitchen. She had to be fast or she'd miss his introduction to the ways of the disposable, lower class.

"Are you going to tell me your name?"

Pennye turned back to find Roger smiling at her again. "Are you writing a book?" she snapped.

"I told you my name," he said, seemingly dismissive of her sarcasm.

"It's Pennye."

"Pennye...?" He pressed for her last name.

"B--" She swallowed. Boyle hadn't been her last name for over a decade. She didn't think she'd even spoken it in that long. God, I may have agreed to come back here, but I'm not reclaiming that last name. "Boy, you don't let up." She laughed and tried to brush off her discomfort.

He tilted his head, still waiting for her response.

"Penn-ee Car-ring-ton." She enunciated each syllable, slow and distinct, taunting his way of speech.

"It's nice to meet you, Penn-ee Car-ring-ton." He repeated her name in the same exaggerated manner.

Pennye rolled her eyes as she turned away, rushed to fill his soda and then hurried back out. A smile tugged at her lips when she realized he had already eaten to the center of the burger.

Her bet was that for all his protest against catsup, for whatever reason, he wouldn't even notice what she'd done. Maybe she should toy with him a bit.

"You want any catsup for those fries or do you eat those dry, too?" she asked as she set his soda down.

"I would love some, but I can't."

"Can't?" Pennye folded her arms across her chest and held up a thumb and finger, measuring a small distance between them. "Not even a tad?" She had to bite her lip to keep from laughing.

"Not unless you want to rush me to the hospital." He tugged at his neck tie and cleared his throat. "I'm deathly allergic to tomatoes."

I loved the tension and suspenseful feel of this novel. Since I already knew the characters from the first two books in the series, I was really familiar with the family dynamics. Great story that really pulls you along.
