Product Description

Orphaned at a young age after a harrowing voyage to New Zealand, English native Laura has suffered more than most. Shown mercy by a clan of formidable Maori tribesmen, she is raised as one of their own.

Years later, English settler James Mason, visits their village and is besotted with Laura. Their relationship blossoms swiftly and it isn’t long before Laura falls pregnant.

Shortly after giving birth to their daughter, Lily, Laura is caught in the middle of a violent clash between two warring cultures, and is gravely wounded and abducted from the village.

Assumed dead by all but James, he vows to find her, while taking up the challenging task of raising his daughter alone in the unforgiving land that is nineteenth century New Zealand.

"Are they going to kill me?"

Aroha opened her mouth and then hesitated before speaking. "The tall angry looking one, he wants to."

Black spots floated in front of her eyes. She swayed on her feet and leaned into Aroha. "Why?"

"He thinks you will kill the whole village."

"How? Why would I do that?"

"He thinks your sickness will spread."

"But it was the sea that made me sick. I can't hurt anybody."

"I know. I told my Pāpā," Aroha said

"Did he believe you?"

Laura looked out the doorway where she could see men talking in a close group.

"Don't be scared. I won't let them hurt you." A minute or so later, a bare-chested Maori man burst into the hut. His broad face lacked emotion, but Laura was sure she could see murder in his eyes. He stomped toward her and hauled her to her feet. Laura screamed. Aroha jumped up and battered the man's back with her fists. He turned and swatted her off. She fell away but was on him again in an instant. One of her jabs must have hit something sensitive, making him grunt.

He shoved Aroha. She hit the ground with a plonk. Laura looked back at her as she was being forced out of the hut. Aroha made it back onto her feet, but another man stepped in front of her thwarting any further struggle. Aroha flopped to the ground and cried.
