Susan Marie Van Pelt escapes from the family brownstone in New York City to join her papa on his silver claim in Nevada. Jed Miller buried his partner, Digger Van Pelt a month before Susan shows up.

Jed and Susan must work together to get the silver out of the ground and keep it out of the clutches of Fox, the local lawyer and all around villain. When he sets his sights on Susan, she proposes a marriage of convenience to Jed.

Can he wed her without bedding her? Can they work the claim together with him digging and her cooking--not too well at first--and go their separate ways? Can Jed keep her safe from Fox and his henchmen?

Excerpt

She looked Jed in the eye. "We could have a marriage of convenience."

"You're proposing to me?" He stamped around the area. "If that don't beat all."

He didn't sound pleased by her idea, but she forged ahead. "That means we won't share a bed."

Jed stared at her a moment, then gave a choked laugh. "Maybe not in the sense of consummating the marriage, but there's only one sleeping place in that cabin."

Her cheeks grew hot. Consummating? As in mating? Of course, that’s what Mama had meant. You couldn’t have babies without mating.

Jed grinned, his mustache lifting, his teeth white in his beard. He looked big and tough and wild. "I don't think a little lady like you would be much of a bed warmer. You probably won't take up as much room in the bedclothes as your father. I made the pallet long and wide to suit me. I'll just pretend you're Digger when I wake up in the early morning and give you a kick so you can start the coffee while I get the tools ready for a day's mining."

The idea of sleeping in the same bed as Jed, even if it was big enough so they never touched, made her heart beat faster, but she needed to focus on her main objective here. "Are you willing to concentrate on getting the silver out and accept a marriage of convenience?"

Jed eyed her up and down. "If that's what you want."

That was what she wanted, but she knew he'd be willing to consummate the marriage if she changed her mind. Everybody knew how men were. "I suppose we can annul the marriage in Carson City at summer's end. Then each of us can go our own way. I don't think anyone in New York City will know what happened in a place like Silver Hill."

But I'll know, thought Susan. I'll remember this man all my days. I may marry a gentleman and live in a big house, but I'll always remember this rough man who stirred my senses. She looked at the cabin. And he would stir her senses in that little house.

She held out her hand. "Do we have an agreement?"
