Product Description

Carrie Armstrong is a single mother of four school aged children. She needs her job as a U.S. Attorney in New York City to support them.

Ian Gordon is an ambitious loner brought in to head up an investigation of the State’s child protection agency.

Ian offers Carrie a spot on his team. She wants to refuse because of the time away from her children, but she can’t say no and keep her job.

Sparks fly when the two start working together. Ian is drawn into Carrie’s suburban world and family drama. Carrie uncovers an awful truth about the State agency. Against this background of suburban life and political intrigue, the two fall headlong into love.

It was the way he was with the kids that had her worried, that and the fact that he was reaching a part of her that she'd been positive was dead. That also had her concerned. When she'd seen him pull up, with Lizzie as his guide, in his convertible, Lizzie's eyes shiny with excitement and pride, she'd been touched. When she saw him walking across the playing field with his hand naturally draped over Brian's shoulder, something caught in her throat and made her breathless. What got to her was how natural it felt to be sitting in the stadium watching Joey's game with Lizzie and Brian sitting in the row in front of them with their backs against her and Ian's legs, with Molly in Ian's lap. It had happened so easily. They'd climbed up to the seats, next to Ellen and Don and settled themselves with Molly in between them. Except Molly -- with no hesitation -- had climbed into Ian's lap like she belonged there. Just as astonishing was how comfortable Ian looked.

They missed having a dad, she realized. She also thought it was interesting they were so willing to have Ian replace Joe. Shouldn't they have resented Ian? It hadn’t been so long since he died. Did Joe's casual indifference to them mean he was easy to replace?
