Product Description

Mallory Andrews didn’t want to return to her hometown. And she didn’t want to return to her Southern Baptist roots. She was fine, she kept telling herself, far from home and the God she’d lost faith in. But when her mother’s death calls her back she returns to Texas. And what was supposed to be a short trip quickly becomes a move home. As she becomes part of her father’s contracting business she finds that the small town has changed. And as she and her father heal from their loss she finds his faith in the Lord reigniting her own dormant faith.

When her old crush, Tres, hires them for a restoration project Mallory falls in love with the crumbling old house. And when feelings bloom between her and Tres, she finds herself on the road to a brand new, unexpected life filled with faith, sweet tea, and fresh paint.

Aunt Joann shattered the quiet whisper of the snowfall with the slamming of the screen door. She appeared just behind Dad, stopping when she saw he was with me. For a moment I thought she was Mom, standing there wrapped in the sky blue shawl Mom had loved to cuddle up in on cool days. I blinked and cleared my vision, and she was herself, a mix of concern and disappointment on her face.

"Come inside, Jonah. It's starting to snow." She turned and started to go, stopped by Dad's question.

"What about Mallory, Joann? Don't you want her to come inside too?"

She stared at him, struggling with what she wanted to say and what she thought she should say.

"She's your sister's only child. Remember that before you answer." His tone carried a warning. The silent treatment ends now, it hinted.

Her eyes flicked from his face to mine, back and forth, as she thought. She sighed and the frost between us thawed a tiny bit. "Of course I want Mallory to come inside too."

For the first time she looked directly at me and smiled. Even though the smile didn't quite reach her eyes, I took it. I knew it was as good as it was going to get for a while. No one else in the family was as quick to forgive and forget as Dad was.

Dad gave me one more squeeze and then pushed me out away from him, locking his hazel eyes on mine. He looked at me for a moment before he smiled. "I'm glad you're home, Mallie. I hate the thought of you leaving soon."

I nodded toward the door Aunt Jo had slipped back through. "I think you're the only one who feels that way, Dad."

He glanced toward the door and frowned before returning his eyes to mine.

"There is one way to fix this. Stay."

It was the first time he'd acknowledged the rift I'd created in the family. I was surprised at how good it felt to have someone speak about it, even in an indirect way. It was good bringing it out in the open.

I reached up to my shoulders and put my hands over his.

"Well then, I guess I ought to stay." At my words his smile broadened. I followed him into the house, surprised at myself. I didn't know where those words had come from. Up until they had come out of my mouth I'd been planning to drive back to Denver the next day. However, now I'd said it I knew meant it. I wasn't leaving.
