Product Description

After spending her life in foster care, Simone discovers she’s half angel when the demon Wraith comes into the diner where she waits tables. Wraith--the only one who is ever truthful enough with her to admit his words are mostly lies.

Years later, angry that her mother abandoned her to return to heaven, Simone finds herself abandoning her lover, Reese, and their newborn child after Wraith tells her what she can’t deny is truth: “They will grow old and die while you remain young.”

But could he have lied? The only way Simone can know is by finding them, and making a place for herself in their life. And when the balance between human and angel begins to shift in her, she must turn to Wraith again regardless of whether she can trust him or not.

She couldn't help but smile back. Instead of answering the question hanging behind the statement, she said, "I'm off tomorrow." As she heard herself speak the words, she noticed unintended disappointment in her voice, and a piece of herself shifted inside. Yes, she had to admit she wanted to spend more time with him, but it was frightening.

For one, he was so beautiful. Tall, big, and perfectly proportioned. And that pale skin, even with snakes and dragons scrolling loops up and down his forearms. Tonight his midnight black hair was tucked behind his ears and a silver loop glinted in his left earlobe. The tip of a tattoo peeked out of the collar of his shirt above his right shoulder, but did not extend up onto his neck, which pleased Simone. She liked tattoos, had even considered getting one herself many times, but she'd never liked the look of them on someone's neck.

That tip intrigued her. As Wraith moved to glance out the window again, she could see a little more, and she wondered what it could be. The point of a dragon's wing?

Simone realized several seconds had passed since she mentioned she wouldn't be working the next night, but Wraith hadn't commented. The murmuring of customers and clinking of silverware on plates rose around her. Time moved slower. He was never going to respond. She nearly startled when Julie appeared at the end of the table to clear Wraith's dishes.

Julie offered a quick smile at them both as she set the bill next to Wraith, and then a wink at Simone as she turned to walk away. After the first night, Julie had been kind enough to let Simone sit and talk after serving Wraith and clocking out, and making sure Simone got the substantial tip.

The seconds wore on and still Wraith had not commented. Simone shifted nervously in the booth, her jeans sliding roughly across a crack in the vinyl seat. Why wasn't he saying anything?

He pulled out his wallet to pay the bill and stuffed a pile of cash in the small blue folder. Then he gazed out the window to his left again. It was almost, at times, as though he were expecting someone to be watching them. As had happened the first night, when he peered into darkness of the street with its punctuations of brightly lit signs, red tinted his eyes. Simone glanced at the window where she could see a pale reflection of his face with two red dots. Would a reflection do that, if the red in his eyes were a reflection itself?

He turned back and smiled, and the red was, of course, gone.
