Product Description

Born to wealth and privilege in northern Georgia after the Civil War, Mattie returns from a fashionable school in Baltimore to her home at Oak Hill. She plans to marry her childhood sweetheart, but double tragedy turns her life upside down and sends her on an unmapped quest to find purpose and happiness.

One day, she is visited by three ragged boys who open her eyes to the needs of the people dwelling in the coves and hollows of Lavendar Mountain, but her efforts to help them are met with scorn and rejection from her neighbors and even her family. Only her young cousin Sophie stands by her as she struggles to bring literacy to the children of rural Georgia.

Excerpt

Something had awakened Miss Martha McChesney Berry, usually known as Mattie, from a peaceful sleep. With eyes still closed, she slid her arms from beneath the fine cotton sheet and stretched them above her head, diffusing the scent of lavender into the bedchamber.

Her thoughts wandered to the first time Aubrey had kissed her. She was ten and a half, and he was almost thirteen. Curiosity had brought her family and other staid Episcopalians to a tent meeting revival outside the town of Rome. While the adults gathered for the preaching, the younger set sped to the field to play. Mattie was engaged with a group of girls in an energetic game of drop the handkerchief. She had just been tagged. She skipped around the outside of the circle trying to decide where to drop the handkerchief. She had just about made her pick when a rowdy boy sneaked up behind her and snatched the hanky. Startled, she whirled around and saw her neighbor and friend, Aubrey Stewart, with a wicked grin on his face. Slowly, he backed away from her, waving the dainty bit of lace teasingly out of reach.

“Give that back!” she commanded the boy. “I’ll …tell on you...you…you stealer!”

He only laughed at her and disappeared behind a tree. She followed him. “You can’t hide it. I see it behind your back.” She reached around him and tugged on the hanky. Suddenly she found herself trapped in Aubrey’s arms, held fast against his shirt. He was breathing fast, and she could feel the steady thump of his heartbeat. His head bent deliberately, his full, boyish lips bestowing a lingering kiss on her mouth.

Stunned, Mattie caught her breath. The damp, boy-smell of trees and sunshine wrapped her. Eyes wide, she looked up at his face as he lifted his head. The laughter in his eyes had melted to gentleness, and he smiled as he loosened his hold, passed her the handkerchief, and without a word ran off to join his pals.

She watched him go, oblivious to the gaggle of girls running to her rescue. From that moment on, she knew Aubrey would be hers, and she would patiently wait until he realized it.

  1. Inspiring 5 Star Review

Posted by on 12th Aug 2016

Jerilyn Tyner has penned another five-star novel. I first fell in love with Ms. Tyner's writings with her excellent debut novel The Canterbury Question. In her newest release, On Lavendar Mountain, Martha (Mattie) Berry, a young woman of privilege, is depressed following the deaths of the two men that mean the most to her, and she does not know what she'll do with the rest of her life. Her father taught her that all people must be treated with respect, including the illiterate mountain people. His words plus the words of her best friend's new boyfriend are now instilled upon her heart. She makes it her mission to help the mountain people, but with no family support except from Sophie, her young cousin.

On Lavendar Mountain is a fictional story wrapped around the true-life story of Martha Berry who was born more than a century ago. It's fast-paced and written with warmth and compassion. You won't be disappointed. I say kudos to Ms. Tyner!
