Her husband, Kenneth, declared missing and presumed dead, Maddy and her autistic son, Eric, return to Willow Shade. However, she learns the farm’s nearing foreclosure.

Since authorities haven’t recovered Kenneth’s body, Maddy’s unable to liquidate their assets. Refusing to uproot her son again, she joins her siblings in futile efforts to return Willow Shade to a profitable farm. An unknown adversary sabotages every endeavor by poisoning cattle, burning barns, and threatening lives.

Maddy dates the banker, then suspects he's behind the schemes, but he proposes marriage, promising to save her family homestead. Maddy would do almost anything for Eric, but can she do this?

Kenneth appears to her in phenomenal dreams, as if reaching out to her from the dead, but what do they mean? Is he really gone, or is their love strong enough to telepath across continents? Will he return to Maddy before she marries someone else?

Excerpt

The doctor checked Eric's neurologic reflexes and skills as far as Eric would cooperate. "Would you take Eric into the playroom, Sally?

"Mrs. Kennedy, I'd like for Eric to see some other specialists, but I'm going to be up front with you. I'm looking for autism. I think the other doctors will confirm it."

"Autism? But Eric was a normal child for two years. How could this be?"

"There's a spectrum known as regressive autism. Of course my diagnosis isn't final, but I'd never have mentioned it if I wasn't sure in my own mind."

"What can be done for him?"

"Not much at this point. Autism wasn't even heard of before the twentieth century, and here it is in the nineteen-eighties and we don't know much more than we did back when it was first diagnosed. Good news is doctors are beginning to study and work toward at least a step forward in treatment. Usually the child is placed in a home with skilled nurses, doctors and teachers, but--"

"No," Maddy interrupted. "No. Eric will stay with me."

"In that case, Mrs. Kennedy, I suggest you go to the library or book store and find a book titled SON RISE the Miracle Continues by Barry Neil Kaufman. It's a true story of how one family handled their son diagnosed with autism. I'm not telling you the Son Rise system will work for Eric, but at least it will give insight into what you may expect as you meet with various doctors and many obstacles.

"I'll set up appointments with specialists in the area, if you wish."

Maddy wasn't sure what she or the doctor said from that point on. The nice doctor patted her shoulder and said something. His eyes apologized for the traumatic things he's said to her.

She'd ask Sally later what she'd need to do next. Sally was a good friend. She'd find out the information Maddy had missed. Maddy needed to go home now. She took her boy by the hand and headed for the library, then home. Welby met them at the back door. Maddy took Eric upstairs for a nap and retired to her room, Welby at her side. She was glad Daddy was out in the barn.

She'd been too shocked to cry in the office, but now, here with just herself and her dog, she let the tears flow like a stream feeding a fresh-water spring. "Welby, old pal, I don't know what to do. Kenneth needs to be here with me. He shouldn't have left in the first place. He could've at least warned me of what he was doing. South America. He was only a private detective. He shouldn't be working under-cover."

  1. "an inspiring story about the strength of family..." 5 Star Review

Posted by on 24th Aug 2013

"What an inspiring story about the strength of family, and how nothing is impossible as long as you have loved ones...

The plots in this story are truly entertaining. There are multiple layers of this story and I loved peeling back each one just to find something new. Whether it be a strong conflict or a journey of self discovery a reader is seeking, you’ll find it here. Plus the twist and turns in the story really keep me turning the pages. This story was different from what would normally pique my interest, but was happy I gave it a chance and would gladly read more from this author in the future."

I loved it! A real page turner with plenty of excitement and twists and turns. The story picks up flawlessly from the first in the series. I kept wondering who was the bad guy. The ending was perfect and I can't wait to read the last book in the series.
