In high school, Charlotte Windham went through a typical ugly duckling phase - glasses and all, while harboring a crush on Garrett Stephens, the school's athletic heartthrob.

Fifteen years later, Charlotte and Garrett have a chance encounter at a Los Angeles restaurant. However, this time around, Charlotte has leveled the playing field. She’s a bestselling novelist and no longer “Glasses,” the humiliating nickname Garrett gave her. She’s a catch and, thanks to corrective eye surgery, it’s not just her eyes that see better…so does her heart!

Garrett hasn’t fared poorly either, transforming from teen heartbreaker to adult lothario and is now a successful professional golfer suffering from a possible career-ending injury.

Can Charlotte forgive Garrett for his past ways, and more recent Don Juan lifestyle? Will she even want to? And, can Garrett change his ways for a second chance with Charlotte, who may just be perfect for him?

Excerpt

I stand but hesitate when I see Tamika's disapproving look. Fi notices as well. "It's okay, T. I got this," she says, motioning for me to follow her back. When we get to her small office, she closes the door and gestures for me to sit on a red vinyl chair, circa 1972. She stands in front of me, leaning against the desk, and crosses her arms in front of her chest. "Spill!"

"Where should I start?"

"At the beginning." She walks around to her chair behind the desk and pulls out a yellow legal pad.

For the next half hour, I go over my encounter with Garrett, from the moment we bumped into each other and he didn't recognize me, to the embarrassment of being called 'Glasses.'

Fi takes notes furiously on her pad and grins, nods, and cringes at all the appropriate times. When I finish, she puts her pen down and asks, "Do you want the 'best friend experience' or the 'brilliant legal mind experience'?"

I can't help but laugh. "Are they mutually exclusive?"

"They are," she says nodding.

"Okay. I want the best friend experience."

She rushes around from behind the desk, wraps her arms around me soothingly. "I'm so sorry, hon. That sounds just awful. Let's go get margaritas tomorrow and drown our sorrows in tequila and lime wedges."

"Thanks, Fi. You're the best."

"Anytime," she says, rubbing my back. She pulls away and walks around to the back of her desk. She sits down and puts the legal pad to the side. I can't help but notice the writing scrawled across it.

"Just for kicks, what would you have said if I had asked for the 'brilliant legal mind experience'?"

"You sure you want to know?" Her lips pull into a grim line. Honestly, I'm not sure I do want to know, but curiosity gets the better of me.

"Lay it on me," I say.

"You need to get laid. Not the kind of bland, missionary style sex you had with Alex. You need hot heat, sweating up the sheets, crazy animal sex."

I bust out laughing. "That's your brilliant legal advice. Crazy animal sex?"

"Yes. That's my brilliant legal advice," she says with complete seriousness. "Listen, hon, it's been a year since that insecure jerk Keane dumped you. I have no doubt it's been even longer since you've, well, you know." She wags her eyebrows up and down. "Before that, you only seriously dated Travis the cheater and Alex who, let's face it, despite being completely gonzo for you, was a cold fish and a bore. It's time to stop comparing every man to this fantasy of Garrett Stephens and just do it with him to get it out of your system. He asked you out for Saturday night. Go! Enjoy!"

"I don't compare every man to Garrett," I snap at her.

"Don't you?" she asks, looking down at me sternly.

"I'm offended you even suggested that." She looks at me, her sharp eyes boring into me, like she can read my every thought and knows I'm full of it. I imagine this is how she bears down on witnesses on the stand. I don't like being on the receiving end of that look.

"Even if that's true," I start and she nods her head, "and I'm not conceding it is." I point my finger at her. "Even if he did mean to ask me out, there's no way it's a good idea. He's a total player. It would only be one night of fun and I don't think I could get over that kind of hurt."

"Then you need to get over it now. Sorry for the tough love, hon, but you need to move past the fantasy of this man and find someone passionate and amazing who is deserving to love you for all of the great things you have to offer including your messed-up childhood and your incredible success today."

  1. ...I had such a fun time getting lost in the worlds of Charlotte and Garrett. 5 Star Review

Posted by on 12th Sep 2017

I have been a big fan of Lisa Becker since reading her Click Trilogy, and was thrilled to discover she has yet another fabulous romantic comedy. The opening scene set the tone perfectly, and I had such a fun time getting lost in the worlds of Charlotte and Garrett. There is a lot of depth in this book besides just a romance, and Becker has a clever way with words that kept me turning the pages and becoming more and more invested in the characters. This was the perfect book to read when I needed a few spontaneous laughs, and I highly suggest you check out not only Links, but other books from Lisa Becker as well!

  2. Her snappy dialogue between Garrett and Charlotte had me smiling and laughing to myself. 4 Star Review

Posted by on 12th Sep 2017

This was my first book by Lisa Becker but it definitely won’t be my last. At first I was a little concerned about the alternating first person POV but Becker meshes them together perfectly to give insights into each of her characters. Her snappy dialogue between Garrett and Charlotte had me smiling and laughing to myself.

I loved how Becker perfectly captured Charlotte ‘s insecurities. Despite her recent success, Charlotte is still that introverted geek that doubts her self worth. Charlotte simply can’t believe that someone like Garrett would want her and it almost sabotages their relationship.

At first I wasn’t sure if I would like Garrett. He was extremely cocky and all about chasing that next female conquest. The more time he spent with Charlotte though, the more I liked him. By the end of the book I was cheering him on in convincing Charlotte to commit to a permanent relationship.

Links by Lisa Becker is a standalone novel. Becker has spun a wonderful story about second chance romance that will have you smiling and wishing this was a series. If you enjoy contemporary romance, this would be an enjoyable book for you.

  3. Lisa Becker does a great job of making a standard rom-com trope feel fresh and fun in Links. 5 Star Review

Lisa Becker does a great job of making a standard rom-com trope feel fresh and fun in Links.

Lisa Becker nailed the timing. She didn't rush Charlotte and Garrett into a relationship, but it never felt drawn out to the point of boredom for the reader. It felt natural, how a relationship like this would really play out. There is still plenty of fun to be had while the characters get to know one another.

Overall, Links is a great light-hearted story that would make the perfect book for wrapping up summer.

  4. ...if you are wanting a romantic read, Links is definitely for you. 4 Star Review

Posted by on 12th Sep 2017

Wow. I am going to be really honest and say I didn’t think I was going to love this book as much as I do. This book is dual POV in both Charlotte and Garrett’s so we get to see how both of them think, act, feel, and grow as characters on a deep level. I really enjoyed it and if you are wanting a romantic read, Links is definitely for you.

Lisa Becker did an amazing job at character development. Since this is a contemporary, there wasn’t really any hard pressing trials for the characters to go through but I can honestly say that who the main characters were at the beginning of the book is different than who they are at the end. Even skimming the beginning for a good snippet, I could feel the difference in who they were.

Links is a captivating novel that hooks you in and doesn’t let you go. It has humor, romance, and a good storyline. You don’t want to miss out on this one.

  5. WOW!!! Now I remember why I love Lisa Becker's writing style and stories so much! 5 Star Review

WOW!!! Now I remember why I love Lisa Becker's writing style and stories so much! I read her novel Clutch a while back and fell totally in love with the story. It was funny, entertaining, and felt so fulfilled reading it. So imagine my excitement when I was asked to review LINKS. I'll tell you - I was so. freakin. EXCITED. This book did not disappoint! While the story line is quite different than Clutch; it is more of a romance than chick lit, I fell in love anyways. Apparently, Lisa Becker can write in any genre and still make her readers fall in love. Yipee!!! This is another one to add to the shelves my friends. You are going to fall head over heels for Charlotte and Garrett's story.

PS: I hope there is some sort of spin off with this story. I would love to see some of the supporting characters in their own books. I guess this goes to show you how well the author writes... All of her characters captive and leave you wanting more!

  6. ...with all the shy and heart-melting moments, giggles and sincere feelings. 4 Star Review

Posted by on 10th Sep 2017

That was an enjoyable romantic story with all the shy and heart-melting moments, giggles and sincere feelings. This story is not just about the second chance love but a personal second chance. Be ready to rejoice and laugh with all the witty dialogs, to live through the excitement and passion as the chemistry between the main characters redoubles with every new chapter. It was easy for me to fall in love in Charlotte because of her sense of humor, timidity, and forgiveness. And of course it's hard to resist the gentleman's charms of Garrett, not to mention his sexy and athletic body (Oh, boy...).

  7. Wow!! I fell hard for this story and I regret nothing!! ^_^ 5 Star Review

A second chance romance at it's finest.. sweet, alluring, fun, sexy and romantic. This story is definitely on my top faves list for 2017. How can it not be after this......

Go"one-click" and enjoy, it's definitely a book not to be missed.

  8. This is the first book I have read by Lisa Becker and it won’t be the last. 5 Star Review

Posted by on 10th Sep 2017

This is the first book I have read by Lisa Becker and it won’t be the last. The characters Garrett and Charlotte are some of the best developed characters I have read in a good while.

I loved the way Charlotte was sexy, nerdy, caring and strong. Garrett gets a second change to win Charlotte over. Really liked these two together.

  9. I adored this book start to finish... 5 Star Review

Posted by on 10th Sep 2017

I adored this book start to finish and giggle-snorted my way through this delightfully amusing and smartly written tale. I believe I may well be hard-wired and innately predisposed to love characters who bond over lines from the Princess Bride, use ironic and extremely clever pub trivia team names such as “Trivia Newton John,” and play an uproarious and hilarious bout of the drinking game “I Never.” But really, who wouldn’t? The writing was stellar with witty banter, clever humor, and smirk-a-minute teasing exchanges. Lisa Becker is a comedic genius and my new favorite author.

  10. I really enjoyed reading Links... 4 Star Review

Posted by on 10th Sep 2017

Although I have heard of the author Lisa Becker, I had yet to read any of her book so when an email landed in my inbox asking if I would be interested in reading and reviewing her latest book I took a chance and said yes. The idea of the story is what initially drew me in, being able to meet an old classmate and be completely different than you were sounds like a dream come true, being able to show how far you have come despite their teasing.

I really enjoyed reading Links, I loved getting to see how this duo knew each other, and how that affected their lives growing up, especially Charlotte. Seeing how far she has come, and is now a popular author is really inspiring, seeing that she never let it bring her down and how she followed her calling. Garrett was someone who I thought was arrogant, selfish, and a complete player, someone who I never pictured Charlotte to like. I liked seeing this duo reconnect and how they took things slow, getting to know each other as they are now, flaws and all, and really building a great friendship.

The flow of the story felt real and not rushed, which makes this relationship feel more realistic. The character within the pages of Links are unique with their own personalities that make them stand out from each other. Although it took me a few days to read Links, when time allowed I read as much as possible, squeezing in pages whilst cooking and cleaning.

    Final Verdict
Links is a relatively quick and light read. I loved some of the comedic moments, and the t-shirts that Charlotte wears with quirky sayings. If there was a sequel or spin off to this book I would not hesitate to read it.
