In the heart of Madrid, teenager Kira McIness enters a shadowy world of thieves and pickpockets to recover a pair of stolen earrings. There she confronts a formidable adversary, an East European crime boss, and struggles with Moroccan tradition when, for mysterious reasons, the wrong person confesses to the crime.

Against a backdrop of medieval plazas, an American school and crumbling middle-eastern tenements, Kira must draw inspiration from Francisco Goya's enigmatic artwork to uncover the truth about herself, her obsession with the crime and whom she can trust before the wrong person is sent away and the facts become forever silent.

Excerpt

I’m up and running. “¡Alto! Stop!”

I lunge for the kid, he ducks and my hand hooks on the chain at his neck. It snaps loose. In seconds, he’s twenty feet ahead of me, his bright orange pants churning as he runs away with Margarita's purse.

¡Ayuda!” I yell in Spanish. “Help!”

Waiters from the outdoor cafes yell, and passersby stop and stare. I’m inches away and I know I can reach him.

“Kira.” Margarita is behind me. “Stop!”

“No way.” My heart is racing. “Your earrings!”

“You do not understand what you are doing!”

“Yes I do. C’mon, we’re a team. We’ll catch this thief.”

  1. A Feisty American Girl Wrapped in a Spanish Mystery 5 Star Review

Posted by on 27th Jun 2014

My niece and nephew just finished Kira on a recommendation from me and loved it. Kira is moved to Madrid, Spain where her parents want to live for a year. Kira does not. Surfing with her pals and entering high school in San Diego is the way she plans to go. That is, assuming she doesn’t get kicked out. Kira is an idealist without a lot of impulse control. Not a great combination since she is usually right, and funny, about her opinions but becomes involved in problems, let’s say, not the best way. Soon she is chasing a young thief across Madrid, trying to recover her lone pal’s stolen earrings and neck-deep in a mystery. Will she succeed, not be kicked out of school, help an immigrant family, (learn a lot) and score a boyfriend in the process? A smart book for thoughtful teens and adults, and you´ll laugh.

  2. A Mystery and a Heroine that Guys AND Girls Will Like 5 Star Review

Posted by on 31st May 2014

If you like smart, funny heroines, Kira McInness is for you. Shortly after being “hauled” to Madrid, Spain thanks to her parents’ wanderlust, she is off and running-–literally--across Madrid to right another wrong. A young pickpocket has stolen the purse, and earrings, her lone friend entrusted to her, and Kira is after him. Before she knows it, she is neck deep in a mystery involving the Morroccan community, a criminal gang, the famed painter Francisco Goya, and a multinational band of friends. She must solve it, not be kicked out of school, help a family she never thought she’d meet, and score a boyfriend in the process. Suspenseful and fun. I laughed a lot.
