Sandy Matthews follows her heart into the business world as an art consultant. She will succeed in her own way – which means give people what they want, within reason of course, and they will give her what she wants. This is her path to respect, security, and the good things in life.
Her plan unwinds when her giving becomes a trap. She loses control of what she wants to give and people don’t necessarily want what she offers. She can’t control people like she thought she could and forcing her own agenda creates more frustration -- she can’t wait to escape from her family.
“I presume you've heard about my fiancé dying in a car wreck just weeks before we were to be married?"
"Yes. I remember."
"Well here's something you didn't know. She was pregnant with my child. How's that for being involved with the dark side of life?"
No one said anything. Andy slowly walked back to the table and sat down.
"She was pregnant with my child, and I wanted her to have an abortion. We fought about it, numerous times, and that night she took off in her car after particularly nasty words, and a drunk hit her and killed both of them. Don't you ever tell me again that I don't know what pain or shame is. Don't ever say that again. You're tired of me soaking up your hospitality? I am too. I'll be gone in the morning."
