Product Description

Even at fifty-"ish", Joanne never imagined her life would change so drastically, but she finally admits she's barely surviving her divorce. Surely a visit to her college-age daughter will give her the emotional boost she desperately needs.

But when her daughter refuses to spend the weekend with her mother, Joanne knows she needs to get as far away from Denver as possible. She goes to Washington State with her cousin, Pastor Andy. For a few weeks, she figures she can help him and enjoy the people in the small mountain town of Crystal while she's there.

Joanne meets new and lovely people in Crystal, but all is not the way it appears. Joanne is faced with changing her thinking or someone might die.

"You love this house. And you have a talent for running a house. I know this is hard. Remember those steps of grief we talked about. And it isn't necessarily a linear process. It takes a while."

She nodded. "It was my life, my career, my hobby, my everything. What can actually be more important than a house, a home? Where people learn to connect, nurture each other. Where people can rest from the world, pursue their own interests. I always thought it was an important job. I enjoyed watching my husband succeed. I felt the same about our daughter."

Andy watched her eyes cloud with memories and sadness, but he decided to say nothing.

"And I valued the work at the church. I did good work and the pastors often told me so. Now, I don't even want to go. I wonder what those people think of me? All that work at the church, events I had here in my home for the church –- all of that took work, and now, my whole life looks like a sham."

"I know it's painful," said Andy, but he could tell she didn't hear him.

"Do you want to know the worst of it?"

Joanne used that phrase a lot, but Andy didn't say that. He let her continue.

"The worst of it is, it's not as if I got dumped for a younger woman, or anything like that. She might be older than me. I think she plays golf and people who have met her seem to like her. They aren't afraid to tell me that. Someone said the other day that she has a good sense of humor."
