Product Description

Four generations past, Sherlock Holmes and Charles Augustus Howell were enemies. Their story was played out in the novels written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, a story believed to be complete fiction until recently.

But every bit of it was true, if not for the occasional touch of author creative license, and while both Sherlock and Charles Augustus have been dead for decades, the hatred on the part of the Howell family has remained... and now plays out in a game of revenge between Langdon Howell and MI6 Officer Grayson Oliver Sherlock Holmes. Howell has twisted truths, taken lives, and machinated outcomes with the ultimate goal of finding retribution. His games in Boston turned on him, and rather than breaking Grayson... Grayson found something better. Love. With Kipling Branson.

Life is never "normal" for an officer of the SIS, which is why many officers reject the idea of a family. In the months since the death of his cousin, a man closer to him than a brother, Grayson has found himself wishing more for normal and less for the solitary, sometimes heartbreaking life of an officer. With Kipling, he might have a chance.

But the game isn't over. What should have been a peaceful holiday for Kipling spent learning to share a life and a common space with Grayson, turns into yet another life or death series of riddles... with Grayson's life the final prize.

"No, it only happened because of him. From the minute you met Grayson Holmes, you were in danger. You were practically blown up, you were abducted--"

"Stop," Kip begged, staring wide-eyed at her friend. She didn't dare cast a glance toward John. "Mina, please."

Mina pressed her lips together and shook her head. "I'm only saying this because I love you."

"And I love you, but I also love him. Does he not deserve to be loved just because of who and what he's chosen to be?"

"Which is?" John pushed.

"Why do you care?" she snapped, turning on John.

He never flinched, his bright blue eyes leveled on her, unwavering. "Because I care about you, Kip. If you are so convinced you could be in love with this guy in so short a time, why is it so hard to believe you and I could be good friends in the same time? Have I ever done anything to make you not trust me?"

Kip pressed her lips together and sat back, crossing her arms over her body. She felt sick, her insides churning with nerves and the grease from the pizza she'd managed to force down.

"He's an officer for MI6 out of London."

Kip gasped and stared at her best friend from kindergarten. Mina wouldn't meet her gaze, turning her head to look at John. It didn't go unnoticed how she leaned in until her arm pressed to his. She swallowed, and Kip stared.

"He's a spy?" John asked, incredulous. "Holy geez, Kip. Did you actually buy that line? How many times has he used that one?"

"No, it's not a line," Mina defended before Kip tried. "There's pretty much irrefutable evidence that he definitely is MI6. I'll give him that much. He was apparently honest about that from the beginning, though he really didn't have much choice."

Anger seethed under Kip's skin, and she could only stare until her eyes burned. She pressed her lips together to keep from lashing out and making a bigger scene.

"How did that happen?"

Mina slid a glance toward Kip, but Kip refused to speak. To either give information, or give permission for Mina to share. At least Mina had the good sense to look ashamed for what she'd revealed. Mina drew in a slow breath through her nose and let it out before she looked to John again.

"I've said enough already--"

"Too much," Kip cut in.

"I suppose the circumstances don't matter anymore. Reality is, Kip loves him and he says he loves her." Mina shrugged. "I doubt anything you or I say will change it, John."

"At least we agree on something," Kip said on a rough whisper.

"Can't you see why we're worried?" John started to ask.

Before he finished the question, Kip's phone chimed again and Kip turned her back on them both, standing again to step away from the table. Any excuse to find some space. She didn't recognize the number, only that it was international out of the UK, and her heart leaped again. Stepping away from her friends, she tapped the screen to answer. It only took a second for the call to automatically route through her hearing aids.
