French translator Jenny Hawkins has focused solely on bringing up her family since her husband left them ten years ago. It takes a kiss in the back of a taxi from the equally family-conscious Adam Shaw to shake her out of her comfort zone and realize she can have a second chance at love.

Climbing instructor Fee Braithwaite has been let down too often to treat enigmatic Patrick Cord as anything other than her latest client. But with ruin threatening the family caravan site, she has to move past her prejudices to find, and then trust, the man within the protective shell.

Excerpt

"We've been acting like a couple of sex-mad teenagers," she mumbled, semi-horrified. "We don't even know each other."

His voice sounded contrite. "True, but for a moment there, I thought I did. If I've upset you, I'm sorry."

"It was as much my fault as yours. I don't act this way normally. I suppose you just touched a chord. Are you really sorry?"

He seemed to pick his words with care. "I'm sorry if I've upset you, but I'm not sorry I kissed you because it was magic. Are you sorry about what happened?"

The silence seemed to go on forever. Then, "No," she said.

"About to arrive at Euston," a voice declared.

Heavens, Jenny had forgotten a taxi must necessarily have a driver. She felt herself blush a fiery red.

"Are you going to step out of the taxi and out of my life?" asked Adam. "That would be a pity."

The taxi pulled up to the brightly lit concourse. Jenny dug into her handbag, took out a card. "Ring me or email me," she said. "If you really want to, that is. Sometime when we're both sober."

He glanced at the card. "Jennifer Hawkins. French translator." Then he frowned at the address. "Jethro's Cottage, Mountain View, Delland? Where's that? I've never heard of it."

"It's a tiny village between the Solway Firth and the Lake District. That's me. I work from home."

"I'll email you," he said. "Here, this is my card. Only my business one though." He hesitated, then gave her the briefest of kisses.

She put his card in her pocket, picked up her small case, and stepped out of the taxi. It took off at once. She watched it out of sight.

That wasn't me, she thought. That just wasn't me. I'm thirty-eight years old, for goodness sake. I'm a respectable woman, a responsible mother, sister, and granddaughter. I'm a pillar of the community, people think well of me. Yet I just kissed a complete stranger. I know nothing about him and I even encouraged him.

There was no escaping the thought that followed. She'd liked it.
