Product Description

A Desert Breeze Publishing FREE READ

Rose came to Tabor to help her brother's family during a crisis. She is flattered and flustered when Mischa, a hopeful suitor from her youth follows her, intent on winning her heart at long last.

Andrew, semi-retired newspaper editor, strikes up a friendship with Rose. An elegant gentleman, he strikes a contrast with melodramatic Mischa. He becomes her knight in shining armor when Rose is forced to choose between dreams and reality. Friendship is enough for Rose, but who knows what the future will bring for these two seniors who are young at heart?

A companion piece to Behind the Scenes by Michelle Levigne

Breathe, Rose. Breathe.

"Something wrong, Aunt Rose?" Max darted forward and caught the phone as it slipped from Rose's fingers, then hung it up and guided her to a chair at the table. "Should I call for Dad?"

"No. I'm fine." Rose pressed her hands to her face. For a moment, her skin felt cool, then the whole past conversation flooded through her mind and she felt heat rush through her old body. What was wrong with her? Going giddy over a phone call from Mischa Wyse, of all people? And yet... he certainly seemed to have grown into a kind, considerate, powerful man, hadn't he? "Silly old fool... I'm sorry, Max."

"What happened? Who was that on the phone?"

"An old... well, I can't call him an old boyfriend. My father wouldn't allow me to date." She was babbling and couldn't seem to stop. "I swear that made me even more sought after than if I had been available." Rose sighed and pressed her hands to her cheeks again, then rested them on her open book on the table. "Mischa... I have no idea how he found me, but he called and said he wanted to come call on me."

No, wait -- he had said he found her through a gossip magazine picture, then the Internet. Mischa certainly wasn't the clueless, helpless boy he had been in school. She liked that.

"He's in town?" Max settled into a chair, frowning in visible confusion when Rose burst out laughing.

"No, I'm all right. It's just... I never thought to ask where he was. The silly old man is probably still in Boston. If he's the same ridiculous, extravagant boy I knew, he probably would hop on a plane tomorrow to come visit." She sighed again, the sound ending in laughter. "You probably think I'm an old fool, but you have no idea how good it feels to have someone -- even silly old Mischa -- chasing me!"

"No." Her mouth twitched and that flash of hopelessness and hurt that Rose had seen too many times appeared in her eyes, just for a moment. "I really don't know."

"Oh, Max, for pity's sake!" She sighed and jammed her fists into her hips. "Don't make me slap you. Tony is the most wonderful young man. You love him, and I'm sure he loves you."

"Best friends. Family love." Max's face went nicely pink.

"Give him some encouragement. I've heard him talk about you two getting married--"

"He was joking!"

"What if he isn't? What if he's trying to figure out how you feel before he takes a chance?"

"What's it like to be in love?" she whispered.

"I don't know, really. But I do know what it's like to love someone so deeply, you want to die when you lose him." That same sharp, deep-reaching throb of aloneness cut through her, like it always did when she thought of Morris.
